A House Divided

What happens when Mom is from Michigan and Dad is from Ohio???  You get this. . .

My niece turned 6 months old Friday, August 9th, 2013.  Her Momma asked me about making a split onesie of Michigan and Ohio State.  She sent me the two seperate shirts (onesies) and I cut them apart and sewed them back together as one!  Then I made a "House Divided" tutu to match, one side Wolverines and the other half Buckeyes.

What?  You would like one for the little half and half fan in your life!  I would LOVE to make one for your little gal or sans tutu for your little guy!  Shoot me an email at BlueBarnQuilt@aol.com or contact me through my Etsy store www.BlueBarnQuilts.com

T-Shirt Quilts

A Sister, of a Friend's, Friend. . .

You always wonder where the story will lead when it starts out that way, right?  Well, this one has a very happy ending.  Because of the stretch above, I was fortunate enough to be introduced (albeit through email) to Leanne.

Leanne was wanting a T-Shirt quilt made from her husband's concert shirts along with several others.  She sent all of the shirts to me, via her mom. (Thanks Kathy!)  I supplied the additional materials needed; batting, thread, fabric for binding and of course the labor.  After a little over 3 weeks, mind you Thanksgiving was stuck in there, here is what we have now.

The "front" of the quilt using the fronts of the T-shirts

The "back" of the quilt using the backs of the shirts

The finished quilt is approx 60 inches square.  I am very pleased with the way it turned out and can't wait to hear what her husband thinks about it.

Thank you again Leanne!!  You have made my day by allowing me to make this quilt  for you :)  I'm always happy when I get to quilt.

If anyone is interested in their own T-Shirt quilt, feel free to contact me through Etsy on my side bar or visting my shop directly  www.BlueBarnQuilts.com

The Many Quilts of an Only Child

Being the Mother of an only child has it's advantages.  For example, no matter where I go with him, I always have one free hand if I'm holding his. Or, I only have to buy presents for one child and never have to worry if I'm being even in $ or quantity. Or, If he's with my husband, I have the day child-free. OR, I can make a different quilt for (almost) every phase he goes through.  Here are a few of his phases. . .

Thomas the Train

Monster Trucks

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

I've made a few more than these for him and have two more planned.  The very first quilt I ever made was for him and was John Deere tractors, and he has a second Thomas the Train quilt also.  He also has a crochet "snuggly", you know, the blanket with arms.

Anybody else watching the NBA Playoffs??

First, let me say I was born and raised in Ohio.  That being said, I am a HUGE Dallas Mavs fan.  My son is in love with Dirk and we want them to win the playoffs in a big way for a couple of reasons. . .

  1. Did I say I am a HUGE Dallas Mavs fan?
  2. Um, we don't much care for LaBron.  Didn't like him when he played for Cleveland, and really didn't like him after his "Decision"
  3. We also like the Bulls and since they got knocked out by the Heat, who better to knock the Heat out than the MAVS!!
So, with the second playoff game tonight and the Mavs down one.  Come on Dallas!!  You can do it!!!!!

Canning Jar Hanging Lights

Recently, our local Bob Evans Restaurant has remodeled the dinning rooms to give it a more airy, country feel.  Over the bar/counter seating, they have the neatest hanging lights and the shades are made out of canning jars.  I LOVE the old blue canning jars.  I have several of them and almost always buy them if I come across them at antique stores, flea markets or garage sales.  Here are a few of my blue jars. . .

There's one in my sewing room.
(Yes, I like the Twilight series.  The books are much better than the movies in my opinion, but I'll save that debate for another post.)

In my son's room.  He has marbles in his.

And with bamboo growing in one.

I have more tucked away that I'll often use as a vase for fresh flowers in the spring and summer.

We are remodeling our kitchen and I think I may buy some canning jar hanging lights to put over the bar.  I have been searching the web and so far, I think I like these from Lamp Goods on Etsy the best.  Plus, they are handmade! How much better can it get?
